Connect Xero to Claude: read-only connector or MCP server?

By Renzo Demartini, Chartered Accountant ·

Drafted with AI, reviewed and spot-checked by me.

Sam (sample) asks Claude which invoices are overdue. Claude reads the sample Xero data. Nothing is written. Claude flags INV-5101 and INV-5108 and links both. Sam checks both in Xero. Claude changed nothing. The connector reads and answers. Changing anything in Xero is still your job.

Xero’s Claude connector lets you ask about profit, cash flow and overdue invoices in plain English. It is read-only, so Claude cannot change anything in your books. An MCP server can, and that needs more controls.1

The short answer: start with the connector. Xero says it is “free to add”, and it only reads. Add a route that writes only for a change you repeat each week, and only with the four checks below.1

  1. 01 · AskYou ask in Claude

Which invoices are overdue?Plain English, as you would ask a person

  2. 02 · ReadClaude reads Xero
    Overdue
    3 invoices
    Total
    $4,620.00

Read only. Follows your Xero permissions.

  3. 03 · Links backXero links come with it

    Xero (sample) INV-5101 Overdue

    • Customer A$1,840.00
  4. 04 · ActYou check, then act

Chase INV-5101?Your call, made in Xero or by you

At the end of the day Steps 1 to 3 read. Step 4 changes things, and it is yours.

What the Xero connector answers

Four questions the Xero connector answers, what Xero says it covers and the link Claude gives back
You ask Xero says it covers Claude links back to
How did we do this quarter? Profit and cash flow The Xero report
Which invoices are overdue? Overdue invoices The invoice
Who are our best customers? Top customers by revenue The contact
Is anything entered twice? Invoices with the same customer and amount The invoices

Xero’s page says Claude “reads uncoded transactions and draft invoices too”. It gives “the links back to the Xero report, invoice, or contact it sourced from so you can check the details before you act”.1 Open the link before you chase a customer.

A first test on sample data

Three sample overdue invoices, their dates and what the duplicate check says about each
Invoice Customer and amount Dated Result
INV-5101 Customer A, $1,840.00 2 October 2026 Possible duplicate of INV-5108
INV-5108 Customer A, $1,840.00 9 October 2026 Possible duplicate of INV-5101
INV-5112 Customer B, $940.00 12 October 2026 No match
Total overdue $4,620.00 Check 2 in Xero

Sample data, not a client’s. Xero’s page gives this prompt: “Check the last 60 days for invoices with the same customer and amount, dated within 14 days”.1 Claude can say two invoices match. It cannot say whether either one is a mistake. You open both in Xero and decide.

Whose permissions it uses, and where it stops

Follows your Xero role

Xero says the connector follows your Xero permissions, so Claude sees what you can see.

Each person signs in

On a team plan, enabling a connector by default gives nobody access. Each person signs in.

Cannot change your books

Xero says Claude can’t create, edit, approve, reconcile or pay in Xero.

Disconnect any time

In Claude or in Xero, as Xero’s own page says.

Xero says the connector and plugin are “read-only and follow your Xero permissions”.1 Anthropic says enabling a connector “doesn’t automatically grant anyone access”, and that restricting actions in Claude “never grants more access than the source system permits”.2 Check the Xero role of whoever connects.

When a write route is worth it

25 of the open-source server’s 51 tools can change data in Xero

README tools. Orange: can change data.

The 25 include create-payment and create-manual-journal.

Xero’s page calls its MCP server “a developer tool for custom workflows and automations”.1 Its Remote MCP is “available to commercial apps on Core or above”,3 and Xero’s pricing page lists Core at “$35 AUD” a month, read 1 November 2026. “Pricing is tax exclusive”.4 Worth it only for a change you repeat each week, with a rule that can check it. The steps are in the Xero MCP setup guide.

What the open-source server’s files show

Its README lists 51 tools: 26 that read and 25 that create, update, approve, revert, add or delete, including create-payment and create-manual-journal.5 Without XERO_SCOPES set, its code asks first for scopes such as accounting.transactions.6 Xero’s API definition describes that scope as “Grant read-write access to bank transactions, credit notes, invoices, repeating invoices”, and lists a separate accounting.transactions.read scope for invoices.7

Four checks before anything can write

  1. Make the agent confirm. Xero’s FAQ says “The tools on V1 do not elicit user confirmation”, so ask the agent to confirm before writing.8
  2. Name one organisation. “Each call runs against a single organisation”, so say which one.8
  3. Keep your own log. Xero logs the API calls, “not the tool calls or prompts behind them”.8
  4. Grant the fewest scopes. Give “Only the scopes for the tools you want the agent to call”.8

In Claude, Owners on Team and Enterprise plans can set a permission to “Always allow, Needs approval, or Blocked”. It “applies org-wide to everyone using the connector”.2

Where a person stays in charge

Rules check

Scopes and Xero permissions set what can be read or changed. In a build, a match is a rule, not AI.

Claude drafts

Reads, compares and drafts. It does not approve, pay or send.

You decide

You open the link, check the invoice and choose what happens next.

The connector needs no build. If you want an answer to end in a change in Xero, I build it so Claude drafts, rules check and a person approves. The nearest build is Invoice Check, A$3,900 (AUD, no GST charged), in 2–3 weeks.9 The owner’s view of the same decision is on renzodemartini.com.

If you are not sure which workflow to fix first, start with a Workflow Audit for A$990 (AUD, no GST charged). It is a 60-minute call, a read-only review of your systems and a written report, with a fixed quote for each of the top 3 things worth automating.9 Start with a free fit check by email at the foot of this page.

Questions

Is the Xero connector in Claude free?

Xero’s page says “Yes, the Xero connector is free to add”. You need an active Xero subscription and a Claude account, free or paid.1

Can Claude change anything in Xero through it?

No. Xero says Claude “can’t create, edit, approve, reconcile or pay in Xero”.1

Which Xero organisation does it use?

The one you pick when you sign in. Xero’s page says “Choose the Xero organisation you want to use”.1

Is my Xero data used to train AI?

Xero’s page says connector data isn’t “used to train Anthropic models”.1 Anthropic’s privacy page says its training data “does not include raw content from connectors”, though copied text may be included.10

How do I disconnect it?

Xero’s page says “Disconnect anytime in Claude or Xero”.1
